OH NO - C216 Voted down
On June 1. 2022, a majority of Members of Parliament (MPs) voted against Bill C-216 at second reading, which means that MP Gord Johns’s private members bill dealing with the overdose crisis (Bill C-216) will not be sent to the Standing Committee on Health for further scrutiny. In short, the bill is dead.
Moms Stop The Harm (MSTH) is both angry and disappointed that Parliament will not have an opportunity to address this national, public health emergency, which has taken the lives of well over 30,000 Canadians.
MSTH believes that MPs who voted against Bill C-216 on June 1st should be ashamed of themselves for not letting this bill get to committee so that it could be studied and debated.
As Liberal MP Brendan Hanley pointed out prior to the vote:
“Sending a bill to committee does not mean it will become law. It simply means we need to hear expert testimony on this bill, consider ways to make it better, and determine if that testimony and those changes are sufficient to allow parliamentarians to support the final version and send it to the Senate for consideration. Private Member’s Bill C-216 deserves to get to committee. An urgent national conversation about the toxic drug crisis means that we are doing everything we can to save Canadians’ lives.”
Unfortunately, an urgent national conversation on the toxic drug crisis will not occur because too many MPs voted to sweep this matter under the rug.
For this reason, MSTH has developed an ‘Overdose and Drug Poisoning Crisis List of Shame’. It is a list of all the MPs who voted against Bill C-216 on June 1st. Please remember their names when you consider who to vote for in the next federal election.
And please remember Gord Johns, the NDP member who fought so hard to get this important bill to committee. He deserves our love, respect and admiration. Thank you Gord Johns!
LIST OF SHAME: If your MP is on this list, please take a moment to email them to express your feelings: They must know what their no decision means! The scrolling link below has the link to see your MP information!
