BC Bill 22 - The risks of involuntary care for youths
Join MSTH and Dr. Jennifer Charlesworth, the province's Representative for Children and Youth, for a webinar about the danger of passing Bill 22, which proposes amendments to the B.C. Mental Health Act to allow for involuntary care of youth who overdose. MSTH strongly opposes Bill 22 as it will further harm our loved ones.
The Bill, first proposed in 2020 and paused after widespread opposition, has now been tabled again by the BC government.
DATE & TIME: June 15, 2021, from 1 to 3 PM Pacific Daylight Time
EVENT LOCATION: Zoom (register to attend)
In an interview with CBC last year Jennifer Charlesworth noted:
“the bill should be withdrawn because it will deter youth from asking for help over fears they'd be forced into treatment and because it disproportionately impacts Indigenous youth who have been removed from their families and use drugs to cope with that trauma”. (CBC, July 2020)
In a letter to the former Minister for Mental Health and Addictions Judy Darcy, MSTH co-founder Leslie McBain wrote:
“As the families of Moms Stop the Harm, we strongly object to Bill 22 in its current form, and urge the government to engage in meaningful dialogue with all stakeholders to develop services that actually will help, rather than harm our children.” (MSTH, July, 2020)
