International Overdose Awareness Day! Let's Get Planning!
Moms Stop the Harm invites you to join us for an information session on how to plan an International Overdose Awareness Day (IOAD) event in your community! International Overdose Awareness Day was initiated in 2001 by Sally J Finn at The Salvation Army in St Kilda, Melbourne.
Since 2001, many community members as well as government and non-government organizations have held events to raise awareness and commemorate those who have been lost to substance related harms. Last year over 750 cities around the globe participated in IOAD. International Overdose Awareness Day is an opportunity to remember loved ones lost. The message is simple - the tragedy of an overdose death is preventable and more must be done to save lives. It is also an opportunity to educate and create awareness in your community which can help in reducing the stigma associated with substance use.
This event will provide you with a list of resources and event suggestions. You will have a chance to meet other advocates who have organized IOAD events, who will be sharing helpful planning tips. Information will be provided regarding our annual Purple Ribbon Campaign, which kicks off across Canada starting August 1st. Whether you plan something small or more involved, your efforts will go a long way in breaking down stigma and building compassionate communities. We hope to see you there!
